A remarkable legal agreement from Petersburg, VA, dated Jan. 2, 1865, for the hiring of a slave named Scott from his master for one year (the price: $300). This receipt is a piece of the slave traffic that was entering its last gasp in the last year of the Civil War. It is 6 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches, excellent condition.
