Thomas Jefferson 2 13/16-inch inaugural medal from 1801 with goddess Minerva, representing liberty, holding the Declaration of Independence on reverse. Text says "Under His Wing is Protection, to commemorate July 4, 1776." Date of inauguration is listed on the front. A rare Jefferson item from the Al Anderson collection that is still in excellent condition. ADDED INFORMATION: Many thanks to Alan Weinberg, Bill Jones and Linwood Johnson who examined this piece at the APIC National Convention. Their conclusion was that this is a pewter cast of the inaugural medal, not the silver or white metal version.
