Richard Yates was a congressman from Illinois when he sent this letter in 1852 as an answer to an autograph request. Yates later served as a US senator and was the Civil War governor of Illinois as well as the father of future Illinois Gov. Richard Yates Jr. The letter is 7 3/4 by 9 3/4 inches, has some fold marks.
