The story of the Rutherford B. Hayes Indian peace medal is a bit complicated. Basically, none were ever actually given to any Indian chiefs. The originals were silver but the US Mint also made some bronze restrikes. This is an example of one of those rare restrikes. It is 2 1/4 by 3 inches with Hayes pictured on front and the name of the artist (Morgan) embossed on bottom of bust. Back pictures a settler showing a Native American the joys of civilization. Morgan's name appears again on line at bottom. Rare Hayes item in excellent condition.
