A rare anti William Howard Taft pin from 1908. Taft was giving a speech at the Cooper Union in New York when he was asked, “What is a man to do when out of work in a financial crisis and is starving?" Taft answered, “God knows," which drew the ire of labor union members. This 1 ¼-inch celluloid was made by the magazine The Appeal to Reason, a socialist paper printed in Girard, Kansas. It criticized Taft while hoping to attract support for Socialist Party candidate Eugene Debs. Appeal to Reason back paper, some edge foxing, rust on back.
