Clement Vallandigham was an Ohio lawyer who was a leader in the anti-war Copperhead movement during the Civil War. A former congressman and candidate for Ohio governor, he was the inspiration for the story "The Man Without a Country" after he was banished from the United States. After the war, he shot himself during a trial in Lebanon, Ohio. He was trying to demonstrate how a victim in a murder case shot himself and was not killed by his client when the gun went off accidentally and killed him. He won the case, lost his life. This scarce 2 3/8 by 4 1/8 inch CDV is in excellent condition.
