Belva Lockwood is a suffrage legend who ran for president in 1884. This rare 1 inch tall pin matches a mechanical card and pin that has been sold as a Lockwood-Ben Butler item. The card the pin matches is clearly marked as a Lockwood-Butler item. However, John Koster pointed out to us that if you look closely the name "Grover" is embossed on the arm of the figure under the skirt on this particular pin. So that means this very well could be a an item that refers to Grover Cleveland and Maria Halpin, who fathered Cleveland's child out of wedlock and who was a target in the campaign of 1884. The little skirt is missing from this pin. Either way, it is a rare and fascinating item.
Belva Lockwood and Ben Butler Mechanical Pin. Or is it Grover and Maria?
