We always thought this 1 1/4 inch celluloid was a Carter campaign item, but upon further review we have this explanation from our friend and long-time collector David Wilson: "The peanut club button is not a Carter button. It is a Republican party button and does not promote a specific candidate. It was issued in 1976 by the Multnomah County Republican Central Committee (the MCRCC on the curl) as a fundraiser. You could donate to "feed" the elephant - the Multnomah County Republican party. Their timing was off with Carter's success in his presidential campaign and his background as a peanut farmer. I picked up some of these buttons from the Republican headquarters in 1976. I also have a brochure that describes the fundraiser."
