North Carolina Gov. Angus McLean was viewed as Democratic protestant alternative to Al Smith in 1928. This rare 2 1/8 inch celluloid is the first McLean for president pin like this we have offered. It was issued prior to the 1928 Democratic National Convention. A University of North Carolina Honors student, McLean was seen as a moderate alternative to Al Smith. As Governor he undersaw the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and he used the state's National Guard when he was informed that a lynching was likely. Excellent condition.
