A magnificent Illinois ribbon from the 1896 election. This 10 1/4 inch ribbon pictures John Tanner, who defeated John Altgeld in 1896 in the race for governor, at center. Former governors Joseph Fifer and Richard Oglesby are two of the men encircling Tanner. A real beauty in excellent condition. Thanks to Kerry Pate, we now know them all and when they served as governor: Richard Oglesby (1865-69; 1873; 1885-89); John Lourie Beveridge (1873-77); John Marshall Hamilton (1883-85); Joe Fifer (1889-93); and last but not least Shelby Cullom (1877-83) and the only Illinois senator elected 5 times (1883-1913).
