Ignacio Zaragoza was the Mexican general who defeated the invading French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 – a victory that today is celebrated as Cinco de Mayo. This rare, 1 1/4 inch celluloid is a vintage pin honoring Zaragoza. The famous general died soon after the battle from typhoid fever at the age of 33. This pin with Whitehead and Hoag back paper is a great early item in a celebration that has become a major event today. Excellent condition.
