Horace Greeley’s 1872 campaign was one of the most tragic in history. By the time the campaign was over, Greeley’s beloved newspaper had been taken away from him, his wife had died and he suffered a landslide loss. He then had a nervous breakdown and died before the year was out – most of his electoral votes went to others. There’s no hint of what was to come on this 1 1/8” ferrotype picturing Greeley. It features a gilt brass shell star frame and is listed in DeWitt as HG 1872-20. Excellent.
