Birmingham, Alabama, celebrated its semi-centennial in 1921. The big event included a visit by President Warren Harding on Oct. 26. The President, First Lady and Senator Oscar Underwood spent the day at the celebration. The main event was attended by an estimated crowd of 100,000 and was the first speech ever where a sitting president spoke in the South and advocated racial equality. The white audience did not respond well so Harding added "whether you like it or not." This very scarce and very important in civil rights 7/8 inch celluloid with Whitehead and Hoag back paper, urged others to come see and hear Harding. Excellent condition.
