A beautiful George Washington item with a functional use. This is a Battersea curtain tieback, so called because they were made in Battersea, England. It is believed this handsome 2-inch item picturing Washington was made sometime around 1790, which just goes to show the English didn’t take long to get over losing the Revolutionary War before they figured out how to keep making money in the former colonies. It has a long screw back that went into the wall, then you tied your curtains around it, giving the president the job of holding the curtains back. The china front on this particular example is in fantastic condition, just a few, tiny minor spots. A rare beauty.
