Edwin Conger served in Congress from Iowa in the 1880s, then entered the foreign service. In 1898, he was appointed by President McKinley as envoy to China. In 1900, Conger was reported as being killed during the Boxer Rebellion, but reports of his demise were premature. He had a hero's welcome when he returned to the U.S. in 1901, then returned to China to serve until 1905. This 1 1/4 inch celluloid picturing Conger is in excellent condition.
