The slogan fearless and true certainly fit Peter Altgeld. As governor of Illinois from 1893 to 1897, he pardoned the three surviving men convicted of the famous Haymarket bombing. He also fought for better child labor laws, increased funding for education and appointed women to key posts in state government. One- inch celluloid stud, excellent. When he died at the age of 54 in 1902, Clarence Darrow called him the most courageous American he ever knew. One of Bob Rouse's top Illinois locals.
